FOOTPATH 2/2

Difficulty: low
KM 1
Duration: 1hour
Leave from Manarola railway station passing by the tunnel and reaching the Marina, from where you can choose to walk either along the old trail or along the seafront until the call of Palandro. From here you go up until you reach the footpath number 2 from where the road continues flat along Corniglia beach below. Halfway there is a iron bridge that links the two parts interrupted by a landslide. The trail continues until the hard staircase “Lardarina” leading to the town of Corniglia.

FOOTPATH 2/3

Here begins the road downhill to Vernazza, whose first part is a staircase that reaches the town after crossing some places characterized by agaves and Indian figs. BY BIKE OR MOTORBIKE
For the ones arriving by Motorbike or bicycle we suggest to follow alternative tracks, more panoramic and exciting than a journey on the Motorway.
From Genoa: follow the SS1 Aurelia bordering the sea and reach Bogliasco, Recco, Rapallo, Chiavari, Sestri Levante where you continue until the Bracco pass (610 metres above sea level, a way that will be appreciated by the bikers for its numerous curves and the very good surface). After the Bracco Pass continue on the SS1 direction Cinque Terre, take the first junction on the right towards Pignone. After the small town of Pignone, continue direction Monterosso until you reach the junction to Vernazza and then Corniglia. We suggest the cyclists to visit the towns only if they are interested, because they have to come back to the main road through very steep hills. The whole track from Genoa to Corniglia is about 110 Km long.
Alternative roads:
1. The first alternative is very suggestive and begins from Bracco pass where you can decide to stop in Framura and Bonassola and take the road to Levanto again.
2. The second alternative is shorter and very particular but is not suitable for bicycles. From Sestri Levante follow the road to Riva Trigoso where you continue through the tunnels of the old railway line until Moneglia, then other tunnels to Deiva Marina and then going up again to the Bracco Pass, from where you continue following previous information. This alternative is very rapid but we remember you that in the tunnels the traffic is regulated by traffic light every 10 minutes, they are narrow and single-line and the access on foot and by bicycle is forbidden due to insufficient lighting.
From La Spezia: leaving from the City centre you reach the area of the soccer stadium “Alberto Picco”, on Viale Fieschi. After the stadium you reach a crossing, and after that a junction: going to the left you can reach Portovenere, while going to the right you can reach Cinque Terre on the SP 370 (there are a lot of panoramic spots on this road, from where you can take wonderful pictures of the Gulf of La Spezia). Continue direction Manarola, until you reach the junction to Corniglia, where you go down. The whole track from La Spezia to Corniglia is about 30 Km long

From Milan: from Milan you can reach the High Scrivia valley, and then Genoa through the SS35 of Giovi Milano-Genova. Along this road, very busy during the 50ies when the Motorway did not exist, you meet the towns of Busalla, Savignone, Montoggio, Casella, Bargagli, where you continue until the green Fontanabuona valley from where you can reach Chiavari. From Chiavari you can continue following the above mentioned instructions.
From Piacenza: from Piacenza you can reach Genoa through the SS45 of Trebbia Valley passing by the valleys of Bisagno and Trebbia. Through this road you will reach also Bobbio and Marsaglia. From here you can decide to continue until Rezzoaglio, Borzonasca, Marasco and then Chiavari, or to make a small deviation to Santo Stefano D’Aveto, from where you can reach Rezzoaglio. From Chiavari you can continue following the above mentioned instructions.

Alternative roads:
1. From Borgo Taro you cross the Cisa pass (1039 metres above sea level), pass through the Magra Valley and reach Sarzana, from where you take the SS1 Aurelia to la Spezia and then Corniglia.
2. From Borghetto Vara reach the junction to Pignone, then Pignone, junction to Monterosso, continue towards Vernazza, from where you reach Corniglia.

From Reggio Emilia: from Reggio Emilia take the SS63 of Cerreto that goes along the Apennines until the pass (1260 metres above sea level). Then cross the towns of Fivizzano and Rosaro until reaching Aulla, in the centre of Lunigiana. From Aulla you can follow the SS62 leading to Sarzana and then to La Spezia. From La Spezia you can continue following the above mentioned instructions.

From Florence: take the road to Pistoia, Montecatini, Lucca, cross the Garfagnana region, reach Aulla, La Spezia. From La Spezia you can continue following the above mentioned instructions.

Alternative roads:
From Montecatini to Pisa, Viareggio, Carrara, Sarzana, La Spezia. From La Spezia you can continue following the above mentioned instructions.
For both ways we suggest you to use the S.G.C, FI-PI-LI (Highway Florence-Pisa-Livorno) in the first part and then continue on the SS1 Aurelia.
From Rome: go along the coast on the SS1 Aurelia direction Civitavecchia, Grosseto, Follonica, Cecina, Livorno, Pisa, Lucca, Viareggio, Carrara, Sarzana, La Spezia. From La Spezia you can continue following the above mentioned instructions.
BY BOAT
Corniglia is the only one in Cinque Terre without a direct access to the sea, because the town is located at the top of a high cliff.
The boats connecting the other towns of Cinque Terre do not stop in Corniglia, so we suggest to the ones wanting to travel by boat to reach either Monterosso or Vernazza, Manarola, Riomaggiore, and then proceed to Corniglia by train or on foot.

BY CAR
By Motorway from Italy:
Corniglia has not a Motorway exit, so it is necessary to exit in La Spezia. From La Spezia exit follow the signs to the city centre, Cinque Terre, Portovenere (please note: do not take the junction to Lerici). Cross the city, also bordering the harbour. Reach nearby the soccer stadium “Alberto Picco” the long Via Fieschi and proceed on it until you reach a junction: going to the left you continue until Portovenere, but you have to go to the right along the SP 370, direction Cinque Terre. This panoramic road stretches uphill along thousands of bends overlooking the Gulf of La Spezia: a photo stop is a must. After the slope the road becomes flat and stands above the towns of Cinque Terre: you first meet Riomaggiore, then Manarola, from where you continue along the provincial road in which you meet the junction to Corniglia, which can be reached in few minutes through a steep descent with a lot of bends.
